How to compress a GIF
Drop your GIFs
Drag files in or paste from the clipboard. Nothing uploads — compression runs on your machine, so a 40 MB GIF starts processing instantly instead of crawling through an upload bar.
Pick a preset — or a target size
Balanced is right for most GIFs. Need to fit a platform limit? Click Discord <10 MB, X/Twitter <15 MB or Email <1 MB — or type any number in Target size mode — and the right settings are found automatically.
Check the preview, download
The before/after preview plays the actual output. Happy? Download one file or the whole batch as a ZIP.
Why this compressor
Private by architecture
Most GIF compressors upload your file to their servers and keep it “for a few hours”. Here the file never leaves your browser — there is nothing to retain.
Target size mode
“Compress to under 2 MB” is the actual job. Instead of fiddling with sliders, set the number — the tool searches lossy + color combinations until it fits.
Real preview, not a promise
“Up to 60% smaller” banners mean nothing for your file. The preview plays the actual compressed output next to the original, with exact sizes.
Same engine as the pros
Powered by gifsicle — the same optimizer behind most GIF sites — compiled to WebAssembly and running locally, with every option exposed as a simple control.
A real example
Same 1.61 MB animated GIF, three ways — no cherry-picking, you can reproduce every row by dropping the same public-domain file:
| Setting | Result | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Balanced preset | 1.61 MB → 953 KB | −42% |
| Smallest file preset | 1.61 MB → 671 KB | −59% |
| 🎯 Target size: 0.5 MB | 1.61 MB → 435 KB · settings found automatically | −74% |
Measured with this exact tool on Eadweard Muybridge’s 1878 Sallie Gardner at a Gallop animation — 967×673, 11 frames, 1.61 MB (Wikimedia Commons, public domain).

Frequently asked questions
How does this GIF compressor reduce file size?
Three levers, all from the gifsicle engine: lossy re-compression (tiny pixel changes that make the data compress better), color reduction (a GIF stores up to 256 colors per frame — fewer colors, smaller file), and optional frame dropping. You control each one and see the result before downloading.
Are my GIFs uploaded to a server?
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser via WebAssembly. That's also why there's no upload wait and no queue — and nothing for anyone to store or leak.
How do I compress a GIF to under 2 MB?
Use Target size mode: type 2 MB and press Compress. The tool tries progressively stronger settings until the output fits. Works for any limit — 256 KB Discord emotes, 8 MB email attachments, anything.
Will compression make my GIF look bad?
Lossy 30–80 is usually invisible in motion and saves 30–60%. Past 120 you may see noise or banding in smooth gradients. The live preview exists exactly so you don't have to guess.
Can I compress multiple GIFs at once?
Yes — drop any number of files. Results download individually or as one ZIP, with the same settings applied across the batch.
Does frame skipping change the animation speed?
No. When you keep every 2nd frame, the remaining frames' delays are extended to match, so the GIF plays at the same speed with half the data.
Is there a size or usage limit?
No hard limits, no daily quota. The practical ceiling is your device's memory. A typical laptop handles 100 MB+ GIFs fine.
My GIF is still too big — now what?
If the destination accepts video, convert it: MP4 is 5–10× smaller than any optimized GIF at better quality. Use our GIF to MP4 converter — same privacy, same speed.
