Method

How to remove a GIF's background

  1. Drop your GIF

Frames decode instantly in your browser. The AI model fetches once (~40 MB) into browser cache — after that it works offline.

  2. AI or color key

AI finds the subject in every frame — real backgrounds, moving cameras, all fine. Solid-color background? Color key is instant and pixel-exact, and its preview updates live as you drag the tolerance. Either way, “Preview first frame” shows the result before you commit to the whole GIF.

  3. Export

Transparent GIF for chats, APNG with smooth 8-bit alpha for Discord stickers, or a PNG sequence for editing. Optional matte color fills the background instead.

Real examples, timed

Three real photographic GIFs from Wikimedia Commons, AI mode, run on an ordinary laptop GPU (WebGPU) — no cherry-picked cartoons:

MaterialSizeTimeResult
Museum artifact turntable (white background)1100×736 · 8 frames4.4 sClean edges, fine crack texture kept
Muybridge cat (1887 silver-print photos)1231×551 · 20 frames7.8 sPaper grain removed, tail and legs intact
Street festival crowd (real video → GIF)320×180 · 129 frames45 sForeground dancers kept, crowd and buildings gone

≈0.1–0.5 s per frame with WebGPU. Bonus: all three outputs came out 24–80% smaller than the original file.

Frequently asked questions

How does AI background removal work on a GIF?

Each frame goes through a neural segmentation network — the same class of model behind pro photo background removers — and the masks are reassembled into an animation. The network runs inside your browser, GPU-accelerated where available.

Is my GIF uploaded to a server?

No. The model downloads once (~40 MB, cached); after that decoding, segmentation and re-encoding all happen on your machine.

AI or color key — which one?

Solid flat background (white product shots, green screen, sticker sheets): color key — instant, pixel-exact. Real or moving background: AI.

Why are the edges jagged in the GIF output?

GIF transparency is 1-bit — each pixel is fully on or off, so soft edges are impossible in the format. Export APNG (animated PNG, full 8-bit alpha — Discord stickers use it) or the PNG sequence for smooth edges, or set a matte color close to your target background.

Can I replace the background with a color?

Yes — enable the matte option and pick any color; it fills the removed area in both GIF and PNG output.

How long does it take?

After the one-time model download: about 0.1–0.5 s per frame with WebGPU. A 50-frame GIF usually finishes in under half a minute. Color key is instant.

Moving backgrounds?

Fine in AI mode — every frame is segmented independently. Color key needs the background color to stay constant.

Maximum size?

No hard cap; time scales with frames. Very long GIF? Drop frames first with the compressor, then remove the background.
